A young Auckland design duo has exploded onto the scene at this year's Fashion Week.

Harman Grubiša has only been around for a couple of years, but they've been awarded the most sought after position on the runway.

Not even a stitch in time can save a fashion designer on show day - all their hard work sleepless nights and workroom meltdowns come down to the final moment.

Being chosen to launch Fashion Week is what all Kiwi designers aspire to - it's not just opening night, it will open doors for them globally.

For University mates Madeleine Harman and Jessica Grubiša, this is all more than just a dream come true - it's an enormous boost to their brand and their business.

"To be the Mercedes Benz Presents designers and open Fashion Week is surreal. Last night after we all packed down, I was standing on the runway, and I looked at everyone packing up the gold runway and I had a bit of a cry because as designer, you always dream of that moment," says Grubiša.

"It's an incredible achievement for the brand, we work really hard, around the clock. The market here was ready for something fresh and new and exciting, and it's a reflection of that I think, the way it's taken off," says Harman.

The brand certainly has all the hallmarks of taking off - they opened their first flagship store in Auckland last year and along with big plans locally, they are casting their eyes across the Tasman.
