Harrison Ford is "recovering remarkably" from his horrific plane crash last month and is eager to get back on the tennis court, according to his producer pal Frank Marshall.

The Star Wars icon, 72, was forced to make an emergency crash landing on a California golf course on 5 March after experiencing a mechanical issue while flying a two-seater vintage fighter plane.

He was hospitalised and subsequently underwent surgery to treat his injuries, including a broken pelvis and ankle. Ford was recently discharged to continue his recovery at home and now Marshall reveals the actor is doing well as he attempts to bounce back from the accident.

He tells Variety.com, "I talked to him yesterday and he's doing really well. He's pretty banged up, but he's recovering remarkably. He wants to play tennis."

Ford's expertise in the air is credited with saving his life and others and Marshall insists he isn't surprised his pal turned mid-air hero, because he is a "really good pilot".

He says, "That's the thing you would expect him to do in a movie, but he did it in real life. I've talked to a lot of pilots who said that was a hell of a landing and he did everything correct in that situation. He made an incredible landing, to his credit. He is, after all, Indiana Jones!"

Ford's plane crash occurred nine months after he broke his leg in a mishap on the set of the new Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens film. The actor was forced to take a hiatus from filming in the UK while he recovered.
