One of Greenpeace's founding members hopes the story of the Rainbow Warrior will be made into a movie, and says accuracy is key.

Susi Newborn wrote a book on the vessel's history and a Hollywood producer is now writing a screenplay from it, which she hopes will be turned into a feature length film.

Ms Newborn says people have tried to write scripts before, but they didn't accurately portray what happened.

"[They] completely made up facts about me and involved [me] in relationship with Fernando Pereira, the photographer who died, and they were doing that to add some kind of interest to the story, and I just said, 'No you cannot do that'."

Greenpeace protest ship the Rainbow Warrior was bombed by French foreign intelligence services in New Zealand waters on July 10, 1985 ahead of its planned protest against the French nuclear test in Moruroa.

Pereira was on board and drowned when the vessel sank.

Ms Newborn is a story consultant for the screenplay and says it should be finished in three months' time.

"My wish for the film is that it will be an inspiration to younger generations. You don't really need a lot of technology or a lot of money to be able to go out and do stuff."

She is confident the new screenplay will eventually be made into a movie.
