Hobbit Oscar snub disappointing – Weta Digital

The final Hobbit film has been snubbed in this year's Oscar nominations.

The Battle of the Five Armies has only received one nod - for sound editing - and the head of Weta Digital says it's a major disappointment.

"It was just odd for it not to be recognised because we felt it was really deserving of that kind of consideration," says Joe Letteri of Digital Weta.

Weta Digital was thrilled with its nomination for visual work in the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, saying it was unexpected - but missing out on the Hobbit is disappointing.

"It's more, you know, that your peers in the industry understand the level of work that went into it, the depth and complexity."

The thing that hurts the company the most is that Oscar nominations help it secure new projects.

"That's what it really means, for that momentum you build for what's going to be coming next," says Mr Letteri.

The big winners in this year's nominations are Birdman and the Grand Budapest Hotel, both with nine nods in most major categories.

New Zealand writer/producer Anthony McCarten did well, picking up two nominations for his Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything.

The Hobbit only got a nomination for sound editing, and like Weta Digital, Kiwi singer Lorde missed out for an expected nomination for her Hunger Games song 'Yellow Flicker Beat'.
