Rihanna, Cate Blanchett and Helena Bonham Carter are just three of the names being touted for an female-led reboot of heist film Ocean's Eleven.

Anne Hathaway and Sandra Bullock are also reportedly on the verge of signing up for the film - which has tentatively been titled Ocean's Eight - with comedian Mindy Kaling and rapper Awkwafina also believed to be in talks.

The original Ocean's trilogy was a star-studded affair that showcased the talents of Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Matt Damon alongside many more of Hollywood's A-listers.

The reboot, directed by Hunger Games filmmaker Gary Ross, is likely to be in a similar vein to the chic and sophisticated original - with the cast playing a gang of thieves and conmen who attempt a major heist.

In an interview with Slashfilm two months ago, Ross said the reboot would share a "similar tone" to the 2001 film.

"This [reboot] is very much an extension and a continuation," he said.

"[Ocean's Eleven director] Steven Soderbergh and I are incredibly close friends, and we would not have done this if we weren't. I don't think he would've wanted anyone to do it if we weren't."

Soderbergh will co-produce the film, which will commence filming in October this year.
