Homeland star Damian Lewis has blamed hackers for leaking the TV show's upcoming third season premiere almost a month before the episode is due to hit the small screen.

The popular spy drama returns to American TV screens on September 29, but fans were given a sneak peek at the first episode after an unfinished version of the series hit the internet last week.

British actor Lewis, who plays Iraq veteran Nicholas Brody in the show, has now revealed internet hackers breached 20th Century Fox's web security to get their hands on the footage, but insists no one at the studio was at fault.

He says, "It (the first episode) got leaked. It turns out no one was to blame - it was just bad security online. It got hacked."
