In a surprise unveiling, the highly-anticipated new horror film The Woods has been revealed as a direct sequel to the 1999 horror hit The Blair Witch Project.

No longer called The Woods, the simply-titled Blair Witch picks up years after the first film when footage is found, compelling another group of brave friends to investigate the Black Hills Forest.

The reboot was directed by indie horror sensation Adam Wingard and shot under strict secrecy in Vancouver last year. It was unveiled at San Diego's Comic-Con on Friday (local time).

Under the guise of The Woods, the film was intended as a Blair Witch sequel from its genesis, and only a few people knew the true nature of the film they were shooting, Entertainment Weekly said.

It's not the first Blair Witch sequel to be made. Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 was released in 2000, but suffered largely negative reviews and won a Razzie award for "Worst Remake of Sequel".

The new film, with Wingard at the helm, is said to return to the terrifying 'found footage' style of the original.

Wingard has become a horror filmmaker of high regard after his home-invasion thriller You're Next, which screened at the New Zealand International Film Festival in 2013, and the 2014 action thriller The Guest.
