When a grumpy man in the US wrote to his local newspaper criticising women over the age of 20 for wearing yoga pants in public, it really stretched people's patience.

Alan Sorrentino, a Rhode Island resident, wrote that yoga pants were fine on "children and young women who have benefit of nature's blessing of youth".

But "on mature, adult women there something bizarre and disturbing about the appearance they make in public".

"Not since the mini-skirt has there been something worn by so many women who should never have it on in the first place."

Jamie Burke was offended that after posting the letter and getting a strong response on Facebook, she decided to stage a protest.

"For years men have been policing our clothes choices, and I thought it was important that women had their say," she told the BBC.

Around 400 people turned up to the pants parade, which passed right by Mr Sorrentino's home. Protesters used the opportunity to highlight the issue of domestic violence, as the parade took place during Rhode Island's domestic violence month.

Participants were asked to bring goods to donate a local domestic violence charity, at after the protest they held a picnic, and one woman led a yoga session from a picnic table.
