Taika Waititi’s latest film Hunt for the Wilderpeople has wowed audiences across the ditch, having the biggest opening of a New Zealand film at the Australian box office since Whale Rider.

Wilderpeople took $1,102,662 in cinemas across Australia this past weekend, only $25,696 behind Whale Rider’s opening haul of $1,128,358 in May 2003.

The film’s Australian success follows on from its record-breaking run in New Zealand, where it’s become the biggest grossing local film of all time.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople stars Sam Neill and Julian Dennison and is based on the Barry Crump book Wild Pork and Watercress. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and after nine weeks in Kiwi cinemas is still in the top 5.
