The Lord of the Rings star and theatre veteran Sir Ian McKellen has urged young actors to stop mumbling and deliver their lines properly.

The actor, who started his career in amateur productions in the northern city of Bolton, England, dislikes the way some younger stars speak onscreen and onstage, and wants them to speak up.

He says, "I had an inspirational teacher Frank Green - this would be 1950 or so - and he gave me some very useful advice... He told me that it was the absolute duty of an actor to be audible. It's a lesson that I learned and I still use it to this day... I wish that a lot of younger actors of today would remember it as well. I can't stand all this mumbling and bad projection. Sometimes in a theatre you can't hear a word that they are saying."
