Rapper Iggy Azalea has responded to reports suggesting she holds Britney Spears responsible for the failure of their pop collaboration 'Pretty Girls', blasting the media for twisting her words.

The 'Fancy' star hit headlines on Sunday when she commented on the lacklustre chart performance of her recent duet, which only just cracked the Billboard Hot 100 chart's top 30 in May, on her Twitter account.

She wrote, "It's difficult to send a song up the charts without additional promo and tv performances etc. unfortunately I'm just featured.... i would have enjoyed performing it alot, i think it got off to a powerful start. but you need content to compete in 2015."

Defending her post, she added, "my comment is factual, it applies to any song. I dont have to suck the womans asshole 24/7 to be her friend, do i? bye girls (sic)."

Some critics interpreted the statement as an attack on Spears, prompting Azalea to address the issue again by returning to social media and insisting she wasn't bad mouthing the 'Toxic' hitmaker.

Accusing the press of putting "words in my mouth", she posted, "I think Britney is great", adding, "i really love the song, and actually never said anything negative, only that i think there was room to do more with it.

"im not attacking anyone. all i said was: i wish we had promoted more but thats out of my control. shes a good friend."

Meanwhile, Spears appears to have weighed in on the drama by posting what some believe to be a sly swipe at Azalea, who scrapped plans for a US tour earlier this year.

The singer, who has a Las Vegas residency titled Britney: Piece of Me, took to her Twitter account and simply posted, "So thankful I have shows for the rest of the year to look forward to #YouWantAPieceOfMe".
