The latest Marvel Comics cover, Civil War II #8, has been released and it doesn't look like it ends well for Iron Man.

Artist Marko Djurdjevic's cover features a decapitated and beaten-up Iron Man helmet, bashed into the ground in the pouring rain.

The comic is the finale of the Civil War II event series, which Marvel expert Jordan Tini says has been gearing toward Riri Williams replacing Tony Stark as an Iron Man-like character.

"Tony Stark has already endorsed Riri's desire to become a hero, so she has his blessing," says Tini.

"Along with showing up throughout Civil War II, who better to become the new Iron Man than someone who can build his suits when he's gone?"

Iron Man being killed off?

Civil War II has pitted Iron Man against Captain Marvel, after the pair disagreed on whether or not to act on visions of the future by new Inhuman named Ulysses.

Although the just-released final cover art seems to indicate the end of Iron Man, the comic's writer, Brian Michael Bendis, says fans shouldn't jump to conclusions.

"There are many people who look at that cover and read whatever they want to read into it no matter what I say. I have decided to get very Zen about the whole thing and let it unfold and let people see what they want to see," Bendis told IGN.

"People have made up their minds before they saw the first preview ... I'm also enjoying people screaming at me because they don't know what's going to happen and they think they know what's going to happen, and that's fun too."

Civil War II #8 is released in December.
