Filmmaker James Cameron, creator of the Terminator franchise, has endorsed the upcoming fourth sequel to his 1984 classic.

Terminator Genisys is just weeks away from releasing worldwide and fans of the original films will be pleased to hear Cameron's positive words.

"If you like the Terminator films, you're going to love this movie," says Cameron.

"It's being very respectful of the first two films ... I feel like the franchise has been reinvigorated, like this is a renaissance."

Cameron also says he thinks of Genisys as the third Terminator film - indicating he doesn't regard 2003's Rise of the Machines or 2009's Salvation as canon.

Genisys starts by remaking the opening scenes of The Terminator, before taking the story in a new direction. Promotional videos for the new film show an aged Arnold Schwarzenegger fighting his younger, 1984 self.

The film's tagline is: "The rules have been reset."

Genisys is directed by Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World, Game of Thrones) and set for release in New Zealand on July 1.
