Filmmaker JJ Abrams is heading back into space for a documentary about the race to land a robot on the moon.

The nine-episode series, titled Moon Shot, will chronicle 16 teams competing in the US$30 million Google Lunar XPRIZE.

During the teams' mission, an unmanned spacecraft will explore the moon's surface and transmit pictures and video back to Earth, according to TheWrap.com.

The competition must be completed by December, 2017. The series, which Abrams will executive produce, will premiere on Google Play and YouTube later this month.

The Star Wars: The Force Awakens director will return to space yet again later this year when he produces Star Trek Beyond.
