Jodie Foster will reportedly tell her sons who their father is when they are 21.

The 50-year-old actress hit the headlines this week when she opened up about her sexuality during an acceptance speech at the Golden Globe Awards. As well as talking about "coming out", she praised her ex-girlfriend and co-parent Cydney Bernard.

Jodie has sons Charlie, 14, and 11-year-old Kit but has never discussed their paternity. It has been widely speculated that their father could be Jodie's close friend Randy Stone, who passed away in 2007. His mother Reverend Beverly Bates has now opened up about the close relationship Randy had with the boys.

"Randy told me that Jodie said she'll tell the boys who their father is when they're 21," Beverly told MailOnline.com

"He said he could never tell me because Jodie was his best friend. He said, 'Mom, I can't discuss this with you,' he told me he had had to sign documents, it was a secret he took to his grave, that was how much he loved Jodie.

"He said, 'I can't break my promise to Jodie,' - and he kept his promise to her."

Beverly often wonders if her son is Charlie and Kit's father. She hopes to find out one day, but for now she is just proud of the way Randy bonded with the boys.

"I would love to know if Randy is the boys' father, I personally think he gave Jodie the gift, but she will never tell me," she said.

"To the boys he was 'Uncle Randy'. He took them everywhere with him and cared for them as if they were his own. When Jodie went away on location, he moved in and helped Cyd look after them. He was their father figure."

Beverly also praised Jodie's mothering skills and explained she has not opened up about her sons' paternity because she is so concerned about privacy. Jodie was stalked while she was at college, with the man eventually attempting to assassinate US President Ronald Reagan in an effort to impress her. It left an indelible mark on the star, who never discusses the incident.

"She's not paranoid, but she is very, very careful, and who can blame her, some nut head could try and get the boys," Beverly remarked.

In her Golden Globes speech, Jodie touched on how important privacy is to her. She said she had done her "coming out about a thousand years ago back in the stone age" and questioned stars who feel the need to share everything about their lives.

She also praised Cydney, who she split from in 2008 after 14 years together.

"Thank you, Cyd. I am so proud of our modern family, our amazing sons, Charlie and Kit who are my reason to breathe and to evolve... Boys, in case you didn't know it, this song, like all of this, this song is for you," she said, as her sons looked on.

Jodie and Cydney's split shocked many as it came just a few months after the actress publicly acknowledged her partner at a Hollywood awards ceremony.
