John Key cited his family as one of the main reasons why he will be stepping down as Prime Minister.

During his tenure in charge of the country, Mr Key's family has never been far from the limelight, particularly his two children.

Max and Stephie Key have not shied away from sharing glimpses of their lives on social media - here's a look back at some of their most memorable moments.

Max's life is a lavish one, according to his Instagram feed. Shooting the back nine with Obama, globetrotting and being places that don't require shirts seem to be recurring themes.

Artist Stephie's Instagram feed is a liberated one - as alter ego Cherry Lazar, she expresses herself as far as Instagram guidelines will allow, using edible items like hamburgers and sushi to conceal what it won't.

Here is a look back at some of the more memorable times Max and Stephie Key have made the news.

Back in 2011, 15-year-old Max Key took the planking craze to the next level. He posted a photo on Facebook of himself planking while Mr Key watched on from behind.

While Mr Key did not partake in the act itself, his appearance in the background was enough to push the image to viral fame.

While John Key was happy to feature in his son's planking shot, he was understandably nowhere to be seen in his daughter Stephie's art photoshoot in 2013.

The series of images included one showing the then 20-year-old obscuring her breasts with hamburgers, and one in which she was covered in pieces of sushi and octopus.

The controversial photos appeared as part of a display at Paris Design Week.

Never one to hide his wealthy lifestyle, Max Key's 2015 holiday video with now ex-girlfriend Amelia Finlayson included sequences shot in Hawaii and around New Zealand.

The video, posted on YouTube, has over 700,000 views and includes a cameo from John Key himself.

After the video attracted significant attention, Mr Key said his son was "just having a bit of fun" and he was surprised at the level of scrutiny it received.

The 2013 photoshoot was not the only time Stephie Key delved into the world of near-nude photography.

In 2015, some raunchy photos were posted to Instagram in the lead-up to Valentine's Day.

The series of love-inspired pop-art images include one of the Prime Minister's daughter standing naked with a caption reading "kiss my ass, a fun game the whole family can play."

Another shows Stephie and a friend embracing each other, while both are naked.

At the time, John Key said while he hadn't seen the images, he accepted that his daughter could be "pretty risqué".

Earlier this year, Max Key appeared in a photoshoot for Remix Magazine in which he posed shirtless and in Calvin Klein underwear.

Most controversially, one of the images showed the 21-year-old posing with an unlit cigarette.

The Prime Minister jumped to his son's defence, saying that Max was "vehemently opposed" to smoking, despite what the image may have implied.

In October this year, Max Key uploaded a video to Snapchat in which he heckled a group of cyclists.

The video shows Max Key yelling "real men ride women," a comment which drew derision from the public  and the Prime Minister.

At a press conference, John Key said the comment was a "poor attempt at humour" and that his son fully took responsibility for any offense the sexist comment caused.

The video was widely distributed across social media.

However, despite the controversies, Max Key has paid a touching tribute to his Dad in a post on Facebook.
