The annual Forbes list of the top 10 most overpaid actors in Hollywood ranks Johnny Depp in the top spot for the second year in a row.

To compile the list, Forbes' analysts examined the last three significant movies the actor was in prior to June.

They then calculated the operating income of those films and divided that figure by the star's estimated pay to arrive at a number for final return on investment.

By that model, they say Depp returned about US$2.80 for each dollar he was paid.

Depp last starred in Disney's Alice Through the Looking Glass, which generated a disappointing US$300 million worldwide on a US$170 million budget.

The movie opened at the same time that a judge issued a restraining order against Depp after spouse Amber Heard alleged he had abused her. The couple reached a US$7 million divorce settlement in August.

Depp beat off competition from the likes of Will Smith and George Clooney for the title, along with Adam Sandler. The Jack and Jill star topped the 2013 and 2014 Forbes overpaid actor lists and came in at sixth this year.

The top ten are as follows (all figures in US$):

Depp starred last year in the comedy Mortdecai and the crime drama Black Mass, which respectively grossed $US47 million and $US100 million worldwide.

He'll appear next in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales.
