The follow-up to last year's box office smash hit Jurassic World has a new man at the helm -- The Impossible director J A Bayona.

The sequel is set to open in June, 2018, and will reunite stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Jurassic Park and Jurassic World directors Steven Spielberg and Colin Trevorrow are on board as executive producers.

Trevorrow is preparing to direct Star Wars: Episode IX, but will also be co-writing Jurassic World 2 with Derek Connolly.

Bayona's tsunami epic The Impossible, which starred Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, made him a highly sought-after filmmaker, previously lined up for World War Z 2. He also directed acclaimed 2007 horror film The Orphanage.

Jurassic World was an enormous success, pulling in US$1.7 billion at the global box office -- the fourth-biggest haul in film history.

Bayona's latest film, dark fantasy A Monster Calls with Liam Neeson and Felicity Jones, is set for release later this year.
