Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow can't wrap her head around the industry accolades her new film has picked up ahead of its US release - because she only completed work on the movie 10 days ago.

The movie chronicles the hunt for terrorist leader Osama bin Laden following Al-Qaeda's attacks on the US in 2001, and the drama is already gaining major Oscar buzz after scooping Best Film and Best Director prizes from the New York Film Critics Circle and America's National Board of Review this week.

Bigelow admits she is stunned by the warm reception her follow-up to Oscar winner The Hurt Locker is getting.

Asked about the Academy Awards buzz, she says, "I only just finished it (film) 10 days ago, so it's sort of hard for me to kind of switch gears and think in those terms. But it would be an honour and be very gratifying (to win another Oscar)... I just hope that people go and see the movie."

Zero Dark Thirty, which stars Jessica Chastain, hits select US cinemas on 19 December.
