British actress Keira Knightley will make her Broadway debut next year in a stage adaptation of Emile Zola novel Therese Raquin.

The Atonement star will lead the cast in director Evan Cabnet's production, about a woman, who embarks on an affair with her husband's friend.

The story is based on the 1867 novel penned by French writer Zola, who turned it into a play in 1873.

Previews for the new stage show, presented by The Roundabout Theatre Company, will begin next October.

Knightley will be stepping into a role previously played onscreen by actress Simone Signoret in a 1953 film version and Elizabeth Olsen in a new movie adaptation last year.

Knightley is no stranger to the stage - she earned a prestigious Laurence Olivier Award nomination in the UK for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her turn in West End show The Misanthrope in 2009 and returned to the London stage in 2011 for The Children's Hour.
