Grammy award-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar is set to be celebrating the US Independence Day this year with President Barack Obama at the White House.

He's booked to perform at Obama's Fourth of July barbecue, an event held for military personnel and their families on the White House's South Lawn.

Earlier in 2016, Lamar met with Obama at the White House to talk about his Pay it Forward campaign, a mentoring service for inner-city youth.

Last year, the President hailed Lamar's 'How Much a Dollar Cost' as the best song of 2015.

Obama also recently announced the month of June as African-American Music Appreciation Month.

He described African-American music as a "vital part" of America's heritage and said the month would honour artists who, through their music, "bring us together, show us a true reflection of ourselves, and inspire us to reach for the harmony that lies beyond our toughest struggles".
