Kiwi singer Kimbra’s debut album Vows has entered the US iTunes album chart in the number 3 position, behind John Mayer’s Born and Raised and Slash’s Apocalyptic Love.
The album, which was released in New Zealand last year and peaked at number 3 on the national album charts, has been receiving critical acclaim from American critics.
Yesterday Kimbra’s US record label boss hit headlines for saying she could be the next Prince, while both Rolling Stone and the Washington Post are comparing her to Björk.
A review in Entertainment Weekly asks: “Who wouldn't get hung up on the New Zealand sprite's bewitching wail and gift for teleporting spryly across the sonic pop spectrum?
“She shifts effortlessly from harmonizing with herself a cappella to growling over a hiccupy hand-clap groove, before bursting into a dance-and-shout refrain - and that's just the opening track.”
“Kimbra's music is significantly glossier and more upbeat than [Gotye’s], but no less adventurous,” says reviewer Adrian Vaziri in the San Fransisco Chronicle.
“Her sultry voice is looped and layered with handclaps on the song ‘Settle Down’, ‘Cameo Lover’ finds her soaring through a bright new-wave melody custom made for breezy summer escapades and, with shades of Roisin Murphy of Moloko, the gently slinking ‘Good Intent’ is just weird enough to become her second biggest radio hit.”
The deluxe two-disc edition of Vows is now available for sale in New Zealand and features the brand new single ‘Warrior’, which is currently the number 27 on the radio airplay chart.
