If there's one thing Kiwis love it's beating the Aussies, and Kiwi sisters Olivia and Charlotte have done just that at the Melbourne Cup.

The pair took out the Cup's fashion competition in garments designed by their mother.

For the stylish and well-heeled, Fashion in the Field is almost as competitive as the main race itself.

The TAB processes 3000 bets per second on Cup Day, and $100 million is turned over.

It's big money for fashion too. In Victoria alone, $50 million is spent on clothing and hats in the lead-up to the cup.

Never mind about the racing - the Melbourne Cup is famously all about the colour. More than a 100,000 people are there for a good time and to check out the frocks.

Racegoers prepare months in advance for the biggest event in the Australian racing calendar.

There's the bright, bold and zany, and then there's the people who are there to horse around.

Bad weather didn't stop the carnival atmosphere; this is Australia's time to shine.

Over four days, punters go through 75,000 bottles of sparkling wine and just as many savouries.

Even though the main race is over, Melbourne is set to party for some time yet.
