A week from today, Auckland’s ASB Showgrounds faces Armageddon.

The annual pop culture expo kicks off October 19 with a preview night showcasing some of the biggest upcoming game releases, giving fans a chance to play them before they hit shelves.

Highly anticipated action sci-fi game Halo 4 will be available to play in the Microsoft / Xbox area. It’s been five years since gamers bid farewell to the series’ hero Master Chief in Halo 3, and the new game is the beginning of a new saga.

Armageddon is the first opportunity for most New Zealanders to get their hands on Halo 4, although 3 News reporter Dylan Moran recently played the game in Sydney and wrote this preview article.

JK Rowling’s collaboration with PlayStation on augmented reality Harry Potter title Wonderbook: Book of Spells will be shown off in an exclusive preview at the expo. Using PlayStation Move technology, the game teaches players how to cast spells just like a Hogwarts student.

Assassin’s Creed III won the publicly selected Game of Show Award at last week’s EB Games Expo in Sydney, and is sure to be a popular booth at Armageddon. The latest release in Ubisoft’s highly successful franchise is set in a new era with a new hero: Ratonhnhaké:ton.

Skylanders Giants, the sequel to last year’s Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, will also be on display, boasting more figurines, levels, and an overall better gaming experience for Skylanders experts.

In celebration of the James Bond franchise’s 50th anniversary, 007 Legends is also coming to Armageddon. The game features some of the most iconic and extreme Bond missions from six films, including the upcoming Skyfall.

Other games on display at Armageddon include Far Cry 3, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Dance Central 3, Rocksmith, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Fable: The Journey, LittleBigPlanet Karting, Assassin’s Creed Liberation, Sports Champions 2, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Lego Lord of the Rings and Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed.

Along with the gaming highlights, Armageddon 2012 is packed with other attractions including comics, anime, cosplay, movie screenings, live wrestling, eating contests, a zombie parade and the chance to meet movie and TV stars in real life.
