World-renowned New Zealand choreographer Parris Goebel has taken up a starring role at the MTV Video Music Awards at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Goebel had a hand in the opening moments of the awards ceremony - the Kiwi masterminding the eye-catching dance for Rihanna's mini-medley at the start of the show.

The 24-year-old had already wowed on the white carpet as she arrived wearing a stunning Pasifika-themed dress in the lead-up to the big ceremony.

Goebel has been nominated for a trio of accolades at the ceremony, and is in the running for Best Pop and Breakthrough Long Form Video - as well as the top prize, Video of the Year, for her work on Justin Bieber's 2015 smash-hit 'Sorry'.

The clip went viral after release, with the song's video - which Goebel choreographed and performed in - getting more than 1.7 billion views on YouTube.

Upon learning of her nomination last month, Goebel took to Instagram to thank and encourage her fans.

"Don't give up on your dreams," she wrote.

"If this Polynesian high school drop out from Auckland NZ can do it ... you can do it too."
