A friend of notorious British gangsters the Kray twins has taken aim at a new movie about the pair, insisting the plot is incorrect as both of the feared villains were gay.

The Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy plays both Ronnie and Reggie Kray in Legend, which charts the story of the two crooks who ruled the London underworld in the 1960s.

A former associate of the pair, Freddie Foreman, has now spoken out to praise Hardy's portrayal of the gangsters but has also criticised several elements of the movie's plot as inaccurate.

He tells British newspaper The Sun, "Watching [Hardy) in action on screen was like seeing the twins reincarnated. His physical likeness to both is uncanny... But one thing the film gets totally wrong is the relationship between Reggie and his wife, Frances Shea. It portrays him to be a Romeo who charms all the birds off the trees, and that could not be more wrong. He was gay, just like Ronnie...

"The film also gives the impression that Reggie was a fun-loving, cheeky chap who fancied himself as a businessman but got dragged down by his nutty brother. It wasn't like that at all. Reg shot and stabbed people for next to nothing...

"But they were also polite and never swore in front of women or raised their voices in public. I'm not sure the film gets that across. But the best thing about Legend is Tom Hardy and the special effects - they are brilliant. The story is not exactly how I remember it in true life and some parts are over the top - but that's cinema for you."
