Actor Kurt Russell has officially signed on to play Chris Pratt's father in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel.

Reports suggesting the Escape from New York star was in talks to take on the role circulated in December, but Russell admitted he was not familiar with the blockbuster and was unsure if he would sign on.

"I literally got a phone call two days ago about this, I've never seen Guardians of the Galaxy so I don't know anything about it," he said.

"Many times I've heard, 'That's a really fun movie, a really good movie (with) great characters.' I don't know it! So, I didn't realise that (James Gunn) had written and directed it, but we talked to each other on the phone. And I just had to be honest and say, 'Thank you for considering me, I have to read (the script), and I have to watch the (first) movie.

"I'm amazed to get asked about this because everybody knows more about it than I do... It's a little weird."

However, it seems Russell has had time to mull over the movie materials because Gunn has announced he will be appearing in the sequel.

"My favorite movie as a small child was The Strongest Man in the World, so I'm glad to announce that, yes, Kurt Russell has joined our cast and, yes, he is more awesome a dude than I ever could have imagined," Gunn writes on Facebook.

Gunn also revealed Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Chris Sullivan have joined the cast in unspecified roles, while Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, and Glenn Close will reprise their roles.

The movie is slated for release in May, 2017.
