Pop star and Hillary Clinton supporter Lady Gaga has staged a protest outside Trump Tower in New York.

The 'Bad Romance' singer got out of her car, perched on a sanitation truck and held up a Clinton campaign sign reading "Love trumps hate".

Her protest came after the Republican candidate secured the presidency, the culmination of a long and bitter campaign.

"I want to live in a #CountryOfKindness #LoveTrumpsHate," she wrote on Instagram.

"He divided us so carelessly. Let's take care now of each other."

Gaga earlier attended the Clinton campaign election night party, and the night before performed at a rally for the Democrat nominee alongside rocker Jon Bon Jovi. There she said it was up to supporters to "fight for your future".

Gaga has been a long time support of Hillary Clinton, urging her "monsters" to get out and vote throughout the campaign.

She also spoke out about Donald Trump earlier in the week calling him a "political imposter" on Japanese television.

"Because I'm a 'celebrity' I have insight into the type of person that Donald Trump is. The truth is that we 'celebrities' know that he's an actor and that this is an act.

"We are standing with Hillary not just because she's far superior as the choice for President, but we're also standing with her because it would be a complete disaster to elect someone that is essentially a political imposter."

Ms Clinton won the popular vote, but Mr Trump won enough states to pull through in the Electoral College.
