Lena Dunham prays she will know when to “pack it in and put a bra on”.

The 27-year-old is the creator and star of hit TV show Girls. Lena’s character Hannah often appears topless during sex scenes and the actress wants viewers to identify with her imperfect body. However, she hopes her breasts don’t outstay their welcome on the small screen.

“I always hope that I’ll know when I no longer need to show my breasts for good. Like I’ll know when to pack it in and put a bra on. That is my prayer to the universe. But then, maybe it will be really important that I do it when I’m 60. Who knows?” she told the October issue of UK magazine Marie Claire.

“I don’t think I’d be able to do this and put myself in all these situations on camera that are kind of humiliating and uncomfortable. Nobody wants to sit there doggy-style for ten hours while they shoot or whatever. It’s not sexy or glamorous. I don’t think I’d be able to do that if I didn’t think it was essentially important in my contribution to the world.”

While Hannah has been unlucky in love on Girls, Lena is much more settled in real life. She has been dating guitarist Jack Antonoff from the band Fun., for almost two years and can’t believe how content she feels.

“Maybe I should follow the whole ‘don’t talk about your relationship, keep it sacred, keep it about career policy’ thing… but it makes me happy to be in a relationship that is really mutually supportive, where I am not making compromises and I feel understood. Because that is not a situation I expected…,” she confessed. “I didn’t envision someone who would understand where I was coming from in this way. So it makes me feel good to be able to tell all the girls on Twitter that you don’t have to date a guy who bores you a little but he’s nice, and you also don’t have to date that guy who is a jerk but you think his art is interesting. There is a person that exists in the middle.”

Lena knew Jack was different from other guys the moment she met him. She felt an instant spark and realised he would change her life forever.

“I remember when I met Jack, thinking, ‘No matter what, life is long and you never know what’s going to happen with a person, but whether we stay together or we don’t, I have met this person who is so good and nothing is ever going to be the same. And I am never going to put myself in any of those situations that I’ve been in in the past. Because I understand what this is like now and I don’t want to go back to that sort of thing,’” she recalled.

Although Lena is loved up and her career is progressing well, she still battles anxiety. She has struggled with neuroses for much of her life, but finds therapy and medication helps a lot.

“I take a tiny bit of Lexapro [anti-depressant] and I keep Klonopin [anti-anxiety] in my purse just in case,” she explained, before revealing she has seen a therapist since she was 16. “I was just on the phone with my therapist before I came here. There are days I totally don’t feel like doing it, but it’s like exercise. Except I am more likely to go to therapy than exercise.”
