Lock up your mothers - Michael Buble's in town

Lock up your mothers, because Canadian crooner Michael Buble performs the first of two shows at Auckland's Vector Arena tonight.

A lot has changed since his last visit here 10 years ago.

"This is a different time in life," Buble told 3 News. "You know when I first came here everything was such a whirlwind that I just wasn't very present."

Life today is very different for Buble – he's a multi Grammy Award-winning artist who became a dad for the first time eight months ago, to a boy who already has his father on a pedestal.

"The other day he did say to me 'mahamahaha'. I don't know what it meant, but I think what he was trying to say was, 'I hope I'm as good looking as you when I get older.'"

Buble does not just have the backing of his son - he is known for drawing an older audience, millions of them the world over.

And his quick-witted humour and down-to-Earth nature might go some way to explaining why.

Last time he played here, Buble joked about how he sent his Kiwi fans to sleep in the audience.

"You know what, I don't know if it's I that sent them to sleep. I think the oxygen they were carrying might've been heavy enough to tire them. You know, at 97 years old they were probably frail," says Buble.

And he says it was his audience who kept him going when he knocked his tooth out with a microphone at his concert in Sydney.

"It was like stepping on a rake basically," he says. "There was 13,000 or 14,000 people that had paid good money to see me and I really didn't want to stop."

That dedication is why Buble is such a hit.
