Mad Max and The Revenant win big at Oscars

The Australians will be celebrating. Mad Max: Fury Road took home a swathe of golden statues at the Academy Awards this year, and the whole world it seems wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to win his first Oscar.

The diversity issue was the talking point, but in between there were plenty of Oscars dished out.

Writing awards went to Spotlight and The Big Short.

In the #OscarsSoWhite acting categories  -- newcomer Alicia Vikander took down Kate Winslet, winning her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for The Danish Girl.

The tussle for Best Supporting Actor was between crowd favourite Sylvester Stallone, who won the Golden Globe, and Mark Rylance, who won the BAFTA -- the British actor taking the Oscar.

The was a lot of love in the room for Italian composer and cinema legend Ennio Morricone, who won Best Original Score for Quentin Tarantino film The Hateful Eight.

Sam Smith accepted his award for Best Original Song for Bond film Spectre.

The Battle of the Blockbusters was fought in the technical categories -- Mad Max: Fury Road versus Star Wars: The Force Awakens -- but there was simply no stopping Furiosa, with Mad Max taking home an impressive grand total of six Oscars.

The rest of the night was all about The Revenant. 

Alejandro Inarritu took home Best Director and after an outstanding awards season, and Leonardo DiCaprio broke his Oscars drought, bagging himself his first Oscar.

The Best Film Oscar went to Spotlight.
