Manic Street Preachers will go head to head with Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys for the 2014 Welsh Music Prize.

The rockers are on the shortlist for the award, which is billed as the Welsh equivalent of the UK's prestigious Mercury Prize, among 10 other nominees.

The rock band has been recognised for its album Futurology while Rhys is named for his disc American Interior. They will compete against other Welsh acts including singer/songwriter Cate Le Bon, rockers Future of the Left, and five-piece band Joanna Gruesome.

Rhys won the inaugural Prize in 2011 and Future of the Left scooped the title the following year.

The winner will be announced on November 28.
