Michael Douglas' relationship with Catherine Zeta-Jones is "on the up and up".

In August the stars, who have been married for 13 years, confirmed they were on a trial separation.

However, Douglas has always been adamant that divorce is not on the cards for them. During an interview with US talk show host Jay Leno on Monday, the 69-year-old actor hinted his marriage is getting back on track.

"Good I hope," he replied when asked how things are with Zeta-Jones. "I've been away for a while but everything should hopefully be on the up and up."

A few months ago, the pair announced they were taking time apart to "evaluate and work on their marriage". Zeta-Jones lived apart from Douglas over the summer, but it was recently reported the actor is back in the New York home he shares with his wife and their two kids.

"Sometimes people take a little bit of a break, but it doesn't necessarily mean that's the end. I'm very hopeful," Douglas added during his TV appearance.

The star went on to reveal that his son, 13-year-old Dylan, wants to follow in the footsteps of his famous parents. Douglas claims Dylan has been using his academic achievements – such as making the honour roll – to convince his mom and dad to let him quit school so he can focus on acting.

"I think it's great [he wants to be an actor]," Daouglas explained. "But I'm a little worried about this no school thing."

Meanwhile, Zeta-Jones was seen shopping alone on Sunday morning at a New York party store. It appears the 44-year-old actress was getting ready for Halloween as New York Post reports she was carrying "a huge, oversized engagement ring party decoration". The publication suggests she may have been "having fun with her marital drama" judging by her choice of props.

According to onlookers, Zeta-Jones was still wearing her diamond wedding ring.
