Married at First Sight: Episode 5 recap

Married at First Sight: Episode 5 recap

Episode five of Married at First Sight, which aired last night, reminded the viewer that the psychologists really meant the show to be 'an experiment'.

All four couples would head to the Blue Mountains, where they would meet each other for a dinner party.

The psychologists would head into a room with a TV in it, to watch as the couples interacted like mice inside a cage. They then proceeded to comment throughout the dinner with incredibly obvious observations.

Note to experts: Scientists are cool and we all imagine ourselves with a Bunsen burner in a lab, surrounded with bubbling chemicals, now and then -- but don't be using a prime time viewing slot to play out your childhood fantasies.

You're psychologists, not scientists. The name sounds similar but the jobs aren't.

Now that's out in the open, let's move on.

The couples began to arrive. They checked out their rooms. Erin and Bryce noticed theirs looked like something out of a Flintstones-themed porno and they weren't wrong.

There was even a leather covered bone in the room as part of the décor.

Simone and Xavier's room was missing a bathroom door and we got some insight into where their relationship really was -- not at the stage where Simone could go to the toilet in front of Xavier.

He suggested she just turn on the tap, and we never found out how that ended.

Christie and Mark's room was a tree house. Christie said if Mark built one on his farm for her, she'd move from her place in Sydney to his in Melbourne. He'd already bought her a pineapple in the previous episode, as if that wasn't enough.

Now he says he's going to start checking out all his trees in thoughts of building Christie the modern-day Australian equivalent of the Taj Mahal -- a tree house.

Meanwhile, Clare and Jono were breaking up. They arrived and had a chat, agreeing it just wasn't working. Clare cried out of disappointment, Jono was upset too.

Violins literally played in the background. It was over.

All the couples got ready and headed to the party. They introduced themselves.

Erin was a little nervous, but she had Bryce and she was okay. They all chatted and things were going well.

Then Jono turned up, alone. Followed by Clare, also arriving alone. They explained how it didn't work, avoiding eye contact with each other all the while.

It was awkward. Before dinner, the couples gently asked the exes how it went so wrong. Jono started, but Clare interrupted. It was painful to watch.

Simone and Xavier couldn't take it, so excused themselves to start making dinner.

While they were gone, it got too much for Clare. She ran out crying at something Jono said. Simone comforted her and the dinner party ploughed on.

Although things were bad, they were about to get worse.

Over dinner Xavier asked a question, clearly directed to the other remaining couples, about how important they thought sex and intimacy was during the 'experiment'.

As the psychologists presumably licked their lips, the couples carefully began to dodge the topic.

Then Clare chimed in. She was a 'sexual being' and she wanted to sleep with Jono more, but he didn't want to.

He disagreed, saying he did want to, but he didn't want to take advantage of the situation when the relationship clearly wasn't working.

The girls drank wine inside and decided Jono wasn't right for Clare. The boys drank beer outside and agreed the two of them were miss-matched.

At the end of the night, they all went back to their cabins -- Clare and Jono to their separate cabins. And the psychologists probably turned off their TV to go home to their chemistry sets.

Erin and Bryce spoke about the evening in bed.

"The dinner party?" Erin asked.

"Oh, that was a train wreck," Bryce replied.

We eagerly await the next episode where the remaining couples meet their in-laws.
