Two people showed up to Max Key's superheroes and villains-themed 21st birthday dressed as his dad.

Prime Minister John Key says he grilled them on which they were -- superheroes or villains.

"They were superheroes," he confirmed to Paul Henry on Monday.

The younger Key's bash was held at his parents' mansion in Auckland's Parnell. Mr Key says he gave as short speech and told a few jokes.

"Everybody left in a good condition."

It was a far cry from the parties Mr Key says some National MPs threw in their youths.

"Nathan Guy, apparently at his 21st somebody came in with a motorbike -- they live on a farm -- and was just doing donuts in the lounge. His mother was not happy."

Photos posted to Instagram by one attendee showed partygoers dressed as Batman villains the Joker and the Riddler. Key himself was dressed as Batman, but was photographed wearing a headband instead of a mask.
