British actress Pearl Mackie will join Peter Capaldi on Doctor Who for adventures in time and space from next year.

The 28-year-old will be the Doctor's new companion in the next series of the long-running sci-fi show, replacing Jenna Coleman's Clara Oswald.

"I'm incredibly excited to be joining the Doctor Who family," said Mackie. "It's such an extraordinary British institution, I couldn't be prouder to call the Tardis my home."

Usually a stage actor, Mackie has limited screen credits -- only appearing in bit parts to date.

"It is a genuine delight to welcome Pearl Mackie to Doctor Who," said Capaldi, who has been the Doctor since 2014.

"A fine, fine actress with a wonderful zest and charm, she's a refreshing addition to the Tardis and will bring a universe of exciting new possibilities to the Doctor's adventures."

Coleman lasted three years and two Doctors, and will next star as Queen Victoria in an eight-part ITV series to screen later this year.
