Mel Gibson is in talks to step behind the camera for his first directing job since 2006 to tackle a biopic based on the life of America's first conscientious objector to receive the prestigious Medal of Honor.
Hacksaw Ridge will tell the story of US Army medic Desmond T. Doss, who refused to kill while serving in World War II.
However, because he saved so many lives as part of the medical unit, he was feted by President Harry S Truman after the end of the war in 1945 for acts of bravery and sacrifice performed in the line of duty.
The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield is the frontrunner to take on the role of Doss, according to Deadline.com.
Negotiations with both Gibson and Garfield are still in the early stages, but if the filmmaker signs on, he will be reunited with Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace, who co-wrote the script for Hacksaw Ridge with Robert Schenkkan.
Gibson's last directorial effort was 2006's Apocalypto.
