Screenwriter Joe Eszterhas has released audio evidence of what he insists is Mel Gibson's vacation tirade in a bid to prove he's not lying about the Mad Max star's temper.

A recording said to be of Gibson exploding into an expletive-filled rant at his home in Costa Rica was released to website TheWrap.com.

Eszterhas claims it was taped by his 15-year-old son while the screenwriter's family were Gibson's guests.

Last week, Eszterhas appeared on TV in America and explained he did not know what to do with the taped recording that his terrified son had grabbed during an alleged Gibson rant.

Eszterhas told the website, "The bottom line is it shows to me he badly needs help.

"My interest isn't to damage him with this tape but to prevent damage being done to others, starting with Jews, including (Gibson's ex-girlfriend) Oksana (Grigorieva) and now, I'm sure, me. I strongly believe that unless he seeks and receives some kind of psychiatric help, someone is going to get hurt."

The feud between Gibson and the screenwriter began when Gibson and studio bosses turned down Eszterhas' script for the actor/director's new film about historical Jewish hero Judah Maccabee.

Gibson has responded to his former friend's claims that he has no intention of making the Maccabee movie, but is using the publicity to boost his own reputation following an anti-Semitic rant scandal.

In an open letter to Eszterhas, Gibson wrote, "I've been working on this project for over 10 years and it was publicly announced eight years ago. I absolutely want to make this movie; it’s just that neither Warner Brothers nor I want to make this movie based on your script."
