Blockbuster filmmaker Michael Bay is planning a remake of Alfred Hitchcock classic thriller The Birds.
Sources claim Naomi Watts is the frontrunner to land the role Tippi Hedren played in the 1963 original, which Hitchcock adapted from a Daphne du Maurier short story.
Insiders tell Variety that Bay will produce the new version with Dutch filmmaker Diederik Van Rooijen directing.
Bay's remake won't be the only modern bird-based horror. Birdemic: Shock and Terror was released in 2010 and played at the New Zealand International Film Festival that year.
It was followed by sequel Birdemic 2: The Resurrection in 2013. Neither Birdemic is as well regarded as Hitchcock's classic, although a cult following sprang up for the first as a 'best worst' film.
