Morrissey has spoken out about, among other things, how the Duchess of Cambridge is to blame for the death of a nurse who took a prank phone call.
He rose to fame 30 years ago as the frontman of classic indie band The Smiths - your average celibate, vegetarian, royal-hating pop star.
Now Morrissey is back in New Zealand to play here for the first time in 20 years and did an exclusive performance and interview with Ali Ikram.
Morrissey, 53, whose real name is Steven Patrick Morrissey, talked to Nightline about his music, the royal prank phone call and his South American fan base.
He says the British royal family is a dictatorship.
“It’s difficult not to see them as a dictatorship, what else are they?”
And he had to give his opinion on the death of a nurse who took a prank call from two Australian radio DJs.
“There is no blame placed on Kate Middleton who was in that hospital, as far as I could see, for absolutely no reason. She feels no shame about the death of this woman.
“The arrogance of the British royals is staggering. And why it’s allowed to be I really don’t know.”
Morrissey questioned whether the Duchess needed to be in hospital.
“Does she have a health condition? Is it anorexia or is it a pregnancy, we don’t know. Well what is the health condition, I mean morning sickness already? So much hoo-ha then suddenly [she is] as bright as a button?”
“I’m sure the palace and Clarence House put maximum pressure on this poor nurse, of course that’s kept away from the press.”
