Oscar winner Natalie Portman is still bewildered by director Lynne Ramsay's decision to quit her troubled debut as a producer for the film Jane Got a Gun.

Ramsay Mysteriously left on the first day of shooting, and Portman hopes the filmmaker will explain herself one day.

Ramsay walked away from the western film in 2013, prompting studio executives to sue the Scot for dereliction of duties which led to production delays on the movie.

They claimed the director was "abusive to members of the cast and crew and generally disruptive" among other charges. Ramsay made it clear in a statement at the time that she denied all allegations against her, but she has never full explained why she quit the film.

The legal wrangle was settled last year, and Portman would still like to know why her director walked away.

She tells The Hollywood Reporter, "I'm as mystified as I think everyone was, and it was pretty devastating. I mean, maybe she'll speak to it one day. I don't know. I got there one week before we were supposed to start, in Santa Fe, and it seemed like there had been stuff going on that I had sort of been sheltered from.

"It was really, really difficult, and we were lucky that Gavin O'Connor came on so quickly. She [Ramsay] didn't come on [set]. I saw her, like, the week before, but on the first day, no. I can only imagine something very difficult was going on for her, and it was devastating."

O'Connor stepped in to replace Ramsay as the film's director. Jane Got a Gun's release has been pushed back twice and is now set to hit cinemas in September.
