In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine, writer and creative director for The Last of Us, Neil Druckmann, said that the news around a sequel wasn't entirely on-point.

He explained that the studio was building a prototype for The Last of Us 2, as they were workshopping other ideas.

"When Bruce (Straley, game director) and I moved over to Uncharted 4, we were brainstorming other ideas for The Last Of Us 2 with new characters; ideas for TLOU 2 with Joel and Ellie; ideas for a sci-fi game; ideas for a fantasy game, and building prototypes for each one of those ideas," says Druckmann.

"And just as we were getting close to settling or narrowing that list down, we were asked to work on Uncharted 4."

This follows on from a story earlier in the year, where long-time Naughty Dog voice actor Nolan North let slip in a Q&A session that he knew the creators were making The Last of Us 2.

In a livestream last week, Naughty Dog writer Josh Scherr also let slip the possibility of a sequel, by referring to the original as "the first The Last of Us".

Druckmann went on to explain that his involvement with Uncharted 4 has left him too busy to even think about the prototypes he and his small team had been working on. However, he also stated his interested in going back to those nascent projects.
