David Bowie has recruited Hollywood actress Tilda Swinton to play his onscreen wife in his new music video.

The music superstar returned to the spotlight in January with the surprise release of his single 'Where Are We Now?' and he confirmed the song would be followed by an album, The Next Day, in March.

He has now released the video for the album's second single 'The Stars (Are Out Tonight)', and it features a surprise turn from the Oscar-winning actress, who is seen playing a 1950s-style housewife and even sharing a kiss with the star on screen.

The video's release comes as Bowie has won over notoriously tough music critics with The Next Day, his first album since 2003's Reality, with reviewers branding the record "thought-provoking", "intellectually stimulating" and "filled with great songs".

Alexis Petridis of Britain's The Guardian newspaper writes, "Perhaps it's destined to be remembered more for the unexpected manner in which it was announced than its contents (but) that doesn't seem a fair fate for an album that's thought-provoking, strange and filled with great songs. Listening to The Next Day makes you hope it's not a one-off."

Andy Gill of The Independent gave The Next Day five stars, adding, "It's certainly rare to hear a comeback effort that not only reflects an artist's own best work, but stands alongside it in terms of quality," while Neil McCormick of Britain's The Telegraph also gave the disc a five-star write-up, concluding, "It is an enormous pleasure to report that the new David Bowie album is an absolute wonder: urgent, sharp-edged, bold, beautiful and baffling... intellectually stimulating (and) emotionally charged."

The Next Day is released in the UK on March 11 and in the US on March 12.

Fans have been encouraged to visit Bowie's official website to design a personal and unique cover for the album using their own photographs.
