FOUR’s new comedy New Girl was originally titled Chicks and Dicks in the pilot script.

The hit show, penned by 30-year-old screenwriter Elizabeth Meriwether, was initially pitched to production companies as "a young ensemble comedy about the sexual politics of men and women”.

The provocative title was always considered temporary as the sitcom plot grew to be more about the main girl ‘ Jess’ and less about the raunchy happenings of the flatmates.

Some critics scoffed at the working title, deeming it to attract attention for the wrong reasons. New Girl has been considered more in line with the show’s premise – it’s all about Jess.

Prior to New Girl, Meriwether found success with her film No Strings Attached starring Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman. She also pitched a pilot titled Sluts.

Meriwether is part of the ‘Fempire’; a group of female Hollywood screenwriters making their mark in what has been traditionally a male dominated arena.
