A New Zealand animated film has been submitted for Oscar consideration.

25 April is one of a record 27 films submitted in the animated feature category.

It brings the story of New Zealand soldiers at Gallipoli to life using graphic novel-like animation, following the Anzacs' disastrous campaign to take the peninsula.

The script was written using the diaries and recorded words of soldiers who were on the ground in 1915.

Written and directed by Leanne Pooley, 25 April uses both traditional animation and facial motion capture. It has already received critical acclaim, premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2015.

Other films submitted include studio big-hitters like Moana, Zootopia and The Secret Life of Pets.

So far, two other Kiwi films have been submitted for Oscar consideration: David Farrier's Tickled for Best Documentary, along with Pietra Brettkelly's A Flickering Truth for Best Foreign Language Film.
