New Zealand Fashion Week is the place to get an insight on the trends that are going to be hitting the shelves over the coming months, and make-up is no exception.

MAC senior artist Kiekie Stanners has shared her top tips to get the look from the runway to the footpath.

Three of the season's big trends have already been showcased in the opening shows of Fashion Week.

Harman Grubisa and the statement lip

The first trend is one which you might be seeing on the street already - a dark, defined lip to add some pop to an otherwise fresh face.

"We did this really great really dark burgundy lip, which we layered a lip pencil down first, matte lipstick over the top and then a whole lot of clear lip last.

"A statement lip is such an easy, quick way to update your make-up routine or to transform your day look into a night-time look with a deep burgundy luscious lip."

Salasai and the sharp eye

Salasai's feature look was a jet black eyeliner, which Ms Stanners says is another look you can add to your make-up routine.

"Not everyone has to wear a certain style of liner. That's what is so great about the trend at the moment. We're not saying everyone has to wear a cat eye or everyone has to do their eyes in a certain way; it's about using a particular technique and making it work on yourself.

"It's always about finding a liner that works for your eye shape. An almond eye will always suit a classic winged-out liner, whereas a round eye might look better with a slightly higher liner or a liner that takes the eyes out a little bit further."

Eugenie and diffused colour

The third trend is the softest of the three - light colour and plenty of blending.

"Beautiful diffused colour on the cheeks, diffused wraps of colour around the eyes in slightly different colour tones and then a diffused lip - everything is very meticulous and perfectly blended so there is no hard lines."

But Ms Stanners says you are always best to follow what suits your face and what you feel comfortable in.

"With make-up trends it's about personalising the make up on the face that is in front of you, which I think is so important, and so in keeping with what women want to wear on themselves."
