Next Xbox won't play used games - report

According to Kotaku, who are quoting industry insider sources, Microsoft are set to shake things up a bit with the next iteration of the Xbox.

While there are a bunch of interesting things kicking around about the next-generation Microsoft console, one particular rumour has got our complete attention: the next-gen Xbox won't play secondhand games.

The market for secondhand games has long be subject to the ire of videogame publishers, who have made claims like "secondhand sales are effectively piracy" and generally take issue with the fact that on-selling games don't result in them earning a cut of the proceeds.

Could Microsoft be set to change the shape of videogames forever by eliminating secondhand sales from the equation?

Other hot rumours going around:

  • The Kinect 2 will debut with the next Xbox
  • The next Xbox will be six to eight times more powerful than the Xbox 360
  • It will be in stores in time for Christmas 2013
  • The GPU will be based on the Radeon 6000 series, similar to that found in the HD 6670
  • The next Xbox will be able to play Blu-ray discs

Interestingly, the performance rumours (which originate from IGN) also say that this "six times the power" will equate to 20 percent more power than the Wii U. If true, that seems to suggest that the Wii U is a lot more powerful than previously thought (it was originally thought to be around the same power as a current Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3).

Obviously, it's all just rumour and conjecture; if the past has taught us anything, it's that consoles rarely match rumours that spring up around them.
