Alternative chart-topper Nick Cave is returning to New Zealand to play in Auckland and Wellington in January of next year.

Promoters promise the current Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds tour is their biggest and boldest production ever, following their latest album hitting number one in Australia.

Skeleton Tree, the band's 16th studio album, was released last month to critical acclaim - it currently has a Metacritic rating of 95 percent.

Companion film One More Time with Feeling, directed by New Zealand born Andrew Dominik, premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

Altogether, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have sold over 5 million albums worldwide.

They're performing at Wellington's TSB Arena on January 17 and Auckland's Vector Arena on January 18.

Tickets go on sale October 27.
