Married actors Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally are the latest stars refusing to perform in Indiana after state officials passed a controversial new law last week, which opponents fear could lead to discrimination against gay couples.
Governor Mike Pence signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act into law last Thursday, and now business owners can use their religious beliefs as a defence if sued by a private party.
Many who believe the law legalises discrimination have spoken out against the move, including celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher, Miley Cyrus and gay actor George Takei, who demanded a boycott of travel to the state.
On Monday, rockers Wilco announced they have decided to cancel an upcoming gig in Indianapolis, and on Tuesday, Offerman made a similar announcement, but promised to show up for an appearance at Indiana University on Wednesday with one caveat.
He wrote on Twitter, "Congrats @GovPenceIN WE ARE CANCELING Indiana Summer of 69 tour 5/16. I WILL PLAY @IndianaUniv this Weds and donate my $ to HRC [Human Rights Campaign]. #Usuck."
Offerman, who ironically played a small-town Indiana government official on Parks and Recreation, and his wife Mullally are hitting the road starting this month for their new joint comedy-variety show, Summer of 69, which was slated to stop in Indianapolis on May 16.
