The survival of the human race rests on the shoulders of recent Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey in his latest movie.

Interstellar hits the box office tomorrow. It's directed by acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan and could be as close to space travel as you'll ever get.

The planet is in its death throes and our only hope lies above us. Actor de jour McConaughey must leave his children and dustbowl of a farm and pilot a mission into another galaxy, on the hunt for a planet that can support life.

Time is of the essence, and when it comes to space travel, time is also a brilliant creative tool for a filmmaker like Nolan to play with.

"It's often done metaphorically, the ticking clock," says Nolan. "Of many thrillers, a lot of the great Hitchcock stuff was done that way. Interstellar has its own approach to that Hitchcockian tension, the ratcheting of tension, using time as an antagonist."

It was imperative for Nolan that he embed his story in real science. He worked closely with renowned astrophysicist Kip Thorne.

"The real science was already known and is far stranger and a far wilder ride than you could ever conceive of as complete fiction," says Nolan. "I was really able to do some pretty wild things with the storytelling, which I probably wouldn't have dared to do if I didn't have the knowledge or the blessing of the scientific community."

"When I went to see this film, obviously I had an idea, as we worked with practical sets, but I didn't have any idea what he was going to put together as a whole," says McConaughey. "It was more extraordinary to me than the actual script was, as you get to see the visuals you don't get from reading the script."

Those visuals, in all their big-screen IMAX glory, are on display at cinemas globally from tomorrow.
